The ATO’s Free Super Payment Service Is Shutting Down: Here’s What It Means for You

If you use the ATO’s Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) to pay your staff’s super, there’s a change coming that you can’t ignore.

From 1 July 2026, the ATO is pulling the pin on the service entirely. From 1 October 2025, new employers won’t even be able to register for it.

What is Payday Super?

Payday Super is the government’s new system that will require employers to pay super at the same time as wages. Instead of paying quarterly, every pay run will now include a super payment that goes straight to your employee’s super fund.

The idea is to make sure super is paid on time and goes where it should, helping employees build their retirement savings faster. It is a good step in theory, but it also means payroll systems will need to keep up.

What this means for you

The ATO’s current clearing house is not designed to handle these more frequent payments, so it will be shut down once Payday Super begins.

For many of our small business clients, this means one thing:

You will need a new way to pay super.

If you have been relying on the ATO clearing house, it is time to start planning your exit strategy. Most modern payroll systems such as Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks already include superannuation payment tools. Your super fund may also have its own clearing house option.

Do not leave it until the last minute. Changing how you pay super is not something you want to be sorting out mid-pay run next June.

If you are not sure what this means for your setup or how Payday Super will actually work in practice, now is the time to talk to us. We will help make sure your payroll, software and super obligations all line up properly before the ATO forces your hand.

Need a hand getting ready for Payday Super?

We can review your current payroll setup and help you choose the best system for your business before the ATO shuts down the clearing house.
